On January 4th, the United Hebrew Institute held its annual spelling bee. Students were given a website to access a listing of the words used in spelling bees across the country. This listing assisted the students in their study efforts.

When the day of the bee arrived, students from grades five through eight waited anxiously for the bee to begin. After listening to the rules, the bee began. Several of the students struggled with words such as magnanimous, verboten, and obsequious. Joshua Rutta spelled canine correctly and then electoral to secure first place. Sixth grade student, Abigail Schwartz, earned the runner-up position while Benjamin Engel, also a sixth grader, placed third.

Eighth grade student, Joshua Rutta, son of Dr. and Mrs. David Rutta, will represent the United Hebrew Institute at the regional spelling bee sponsored by the Times Leader. The winner of the regional bee will travel to Washington, D.C., to compete with the best spellers across the United States. Our best wishes go to Joshua as he prepares for the next step, the regional spelling bee.

Good luck, Joshua!
