Members of the UHI Picnic Committee and Volunteers
The United Hebrew Institute will hold its Annual Picnic on Sunday, August 9, on the grounds of the United Hebrew Institute from 2:00 to 9:00 P.M. The school was built in 1959 and this year marks the 50th anniversary at its Kingston location. Traditional foods will include chicken, noodle pudding, falafel, corned beef sandwiches, noodles and cabbage, as well as all time favorites such as hamburgers, hot dogs, homemade potato pancakes, fries, and funnel cakes. A variety of activities are planned for the children and young adults including a dunk tank which just may feature counselors from the JCC Day Camp! Also included will be a Kids’ Pavilion including a Moon Bounce, Face Painting, Arts and Crafts, Sand Art, and games such as Bean Bag Toss, Dinosaur Dig, Duck Pond, End of the Rainbow, Fishing Booth, Putt Putt, Tic Tac Toe Toss, and Football Toss. In addition, a variety musical entertainment will be provided during the entire picnic and a play will be presented by campers from the JCC Day Camp.
The school’s Parent Teacher Association, chaired by Taly Kornfeld, will conduct a Used Book Sale on that day in the school auditorium. A great variety of genres will be available at reasonable prices.
It is an annual custom to honor a person who has given of their time and effort in order to make the picnic a successful event. This year’s honor will go to Sophie “Geveret” Pernikoff without whose delectable dishes, there could be no picnic. Mrs. Pernikoff, who teaches Judaic Studies to Kindergarten and first grade classes, will receive this award during the day of the Picnic. According to UHI Principal Rabbi Raphael Nemetsky, “Something that is very important to me is that the school is part of the community, both Jewish and non-Jewish and we hope that our friends will join us for this wonderful event.”
This annual picnic is truly community event as reflected by members of the Picnic Committee which include parents of current students, parents of former students, grandparents, members of the faculty, and interested members of the community as well as graduates of the school. The UHI Picnic Committee members include Jason Cohen, Jeanette Good, Roni Good, Kevin Greenberg, Sandy Himelstein, Georgia Kornblatt, Taly Kornfeld, Dror Levi, Sophie Pernikoff, Janet Popky, Jenny Rizel, Kathy Roth, Malka Seewald, Nora Tillman, Alan Weinberg, and Janice Zarad
