Recently, Wilkes University Assistant Professor Dr. Thomas A. Hamill and the members of the Alpha Gamma Alpha Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, conducted several poetry workshops for Barbara Welch’s fifth through eighth grade language arts students of the United Hebrew Institute. These workshops were made possible through the Samuel L. And Claire Rosenberg Grant which brought the arts to the United Hebrew Institute this academic year.
During the first set of workshops, the UHI students learned the many characteristics and elements of poetry. They learned the importance of working with the language to create what they wish to convey and how changing just a few words can alter the tone and meaning of a poem. In addition, the students gained a very real appreciation and love of poetry.
During the second set of workshops, Dr. Hamill and the Wilkes students assisted UHI’s students in the revision of their written efforts. The students presented their poetry at an informal reading at the culmination of the workshops.
