Wilkes University Education 360 Class
Recently, Dr. Robert Gardner and his Education 360 class from Wilkes University conducted workshops for our eighth grade social studies students. During the first social studies workshop, our students, with Dr. Gardner’s class’s help, analyzed primary source documents which reflected the views of several leaders whose opinions indicated that the Constitution, at the time, was not clear on the issue of slavery and as such allowed for differing interpretations. His students’ careful and thorough instruction of these sources enabled our eighth graders to learn the information, reflect on the documents’ implications, and then write their essays which demonstrated an understanding of the complex issue of slavery at that time in our nation’s history.
When they returned for the next workshop, their support and guidance helped our students to revise their essays successfully. Here are just some of our students’ reflections of their visits to UHI
“I enjoyed learning about the complex issues and different perspectives about slavery.” “I liked how each student had a different way of presenting the information.” “I thought that the Wilkes students were great, how they came with a lesson, and explained themselves very well.” “With their comments, we will make our papers the best they could be.” “I really enjoyed working with the Wilkes students. I thought that it was a good experience for both the college students and us. It gave them a chance to see how students on the eighth grade level work.” “It was an enriching and rewarding experience.” “The students brought our work up to a high standard that will not only help us now but also throughout high school."
